After a serious illness, injury or surgery, regaining strength
and mobility may require extra assistance. Rehabilitation
provides that bridge to recovery, helping patients
maximize their capabilities and quality of life.
Patients may benefit from rehabilitation services if they
have experienced a stroke, serious injury, joint repair
or replacement, amputation, or have a brain, nervous
system or muscular disorder. At Sinai-Grace Hospital,
these patients are served by a comprehensive group of
specialists from the Department of Physical Medicine
and Rehabilitation (PM&R).
Since a patient's recovery may require improvements in
several essential areas, such as speech, mobility or
cognitive functioning, a coordinated team approach is
used. The rehabilitation team at Sinai-Grace includes:
- Physiatrists (physicians specializing in physical
medicine and rehabilitation)
- Rehabilitation Nurses
- Physical Therapists
- Occupational Therapists
- Speech And Language Pathologists
- Neuropsychologist
- Therapeutic Recreation Specialist
- Social Workers
Treatment for a Range of Patient Needs
Sinai-Grace Hospital provides rehabilitation services for
many stages/levels of patient needs:
- Assessment and treatment of acute inpatients
to assist with discharge planning
- Inpatient rehabilitation in a 22-bed unit accredited
by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation
Facilities (CARF)
- Outpatient programs at four locations in metropolitan
Detroit
The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
was established at Sinai Hospital in 1967 and CARF
accreditation was first received for its inpatient program
in 1986. In 1999 the inpatient rehabilitation unit moved into
a spacious, newly renovated setting at Sinai-Grace
Hospital.
Inpatient Rehabilitation Services
Inpatient services consist of:
- Rehabilitation consultation service staffed by board-certified
physiatrists
- Assessment and treatment of patients in acute care
units to help plan the patient's safe discharge from
the hospital - our acute services include physical
therapy, occupational therapy and speech/
language pathology
- Comprehensive inpatient care within the Sinai-Grace
Rehabilitation Unit
Patients hospitalized in acute care nursing units for a
variety of conditions, such as stroke, orthopaedic surgery,
amputation, cardiac or pulmonary illness, may need acute
inpatient therapy in order to function at home. The rehab
consultation service provides assessment, monitoring and
recommendations for discharge that addresses patients'
needs. Through a referral by the patient's physician, the
specialists from the Department of Physical Medicine and
Rehabilitation assess the patient's mobility, strength,
communication, and cognition. Evaluating potential
impairments to daily living is essential in order for the
patient to be discharged and returned home safely.
After this evaluation, which is the first step in the
rehabilitation process, a plan for follow-up care is
developed. Recommended follow-up could include
admission to the inpatient Rehabilitation Unit or referral
for outpatient care. The rehabilitation team works
together with the patient and the patient's family to plan
these next steps in the recovery process.

The Rehabilitation Unit at Sinai-Grace Hospital
Some patients require more intense rehabilitation and
are referred to the inpatient Rehabilitation Unit by their
rehabilitation physician. Patients may be admitted from
acute care units at Sinai-Grace Hospital, other hospitals,
nursing homes or from their own homes.
The unit's comprehensive services are beneficial to
patients with stroke, neurologic and neuromuscular
disorders, orthopaedic conditions, including joint repair
or replacement; multiple trauma, and other conditions that
impair function. The Rehabilitation Unit uses a team
approach to promote the patient's independence and
successful return to the previous living situation.
Rehabilitation programs may include cognitive retraining,
discharge and home evaluations, patient/family/caregiver
education, individual counseling and community
reintegration.
Depending upon a patient's condition, rehabilitation
services can include physical therapy, speech therapy,
therapeutic recreation, and occupational therapy, either
provided individually or in a group. The department is
staffed with competent, caring professionals licensed and
certified in their respective areas. In addition, nutritionists
and other specialists are available when needed for
consultation.
The attractive, newly renovated Rehabilitation Unit
includes a therapy area conveniently located next to the
nursing unit. A discharge suite provides a simulated
home environment to help patients learn how to manage
daily tasks. Most patients are able to return to the
community. The Sinai-Grace Rehabilitation Unit receives
high ratings on patient satisfaction surveys.

surgery or who experience chronic pain may benefit from
outpatient rehabilitation at one of four convenient sites in
metropolitan Detroit.
Outpatient rehabilitation includes physical, occupational,
