Our Specialties


Heart Sense

These are educational classes designed to increase the patient’s and their families knowledge of heart disease. These classes are open to all of our cardiac rehab patients and their families.
  

  • Nutrition - A Registered Dietitian from Sinai-Grace Hospital provides this nutritional education. Patients will learn about the different types of fats found in foods and which ones should be avoided. They will also learn how to choose low-fat heart healthy foods at home as well as eating out, and be instructed on how to read the labels on food products.

  • Exercise - This class is provided by Exercise Physiologist or Exercise Specialist. Patients will learn about the different types of exercise and how to exercise properly at home.

  • Stress Management - This class discusses how stress impacts the entire body and how to manage unnecessary stress. We will demonstrate some relaxation techniques to assist with relaxation at home.

  • Anatomy and Physiology - This class is provided by a Registered Nurse and discusses the anatomy of the heart and how it works. This class gives the patient a better understanding of what has happened to their heart.

  • Risk Factors - This class is provided by a Registered Nurse and identifies those things that put the heart at risk for the development of coronary artery disease. Interpretation of cholesterol levels will also be discussed.

  • Care of the Back - This class is given by a Physical Therapist from Sinai-Grace Hospital who will review some simple back stretches and flexibility techniques for back preservation . The purchase of proper athletic footwear will be discussed.

  • Pharmacy - This class is provided by a Registered Pharmacist and is designed to assist the cardiac patient and their family with a greater understanding of the medications they are taking and how each one affects the heart. Cardiac medications, their effects on the heart, how to properly administer them, and any contraindications will be reviewed.

  • Diabetes and the Heart - A registered dietitian who is certified in diabetic education provides necessary information for the diabetic population.  This class covers a brief overview of nutrition and medication for the diabetic.
